Project 12
Ozone Sparging
Project California Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Fund
Rocco's
Freestone Corners, Sebastopol, California
Burleson was retained by Mr. Rocco Silvestri to remediate petroleum contamination at a former gas station site. Residual fuel remained in soil and groundwater at the site from tanks that were removed in 1989. Burleson prepared a Corrective Action Plan in coordination with the Sonoma County Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and the California State Water Resources Control Board (CSWRCB). An ozone sparging system was the technology selected for installation at the site. The system consisted of a master unit to generate low levels of ozone for injection into six sub-surface sparge points.
Burleson installed the system in 2002 and provided system operation and maintenance through 2004. Concentrations of petroleum constituents in groundwater decreased significantly during system operation. The system was originally planned to operate during non-business hours; however, noise from the system was minimal and the system operates continuously. The project consisted of the following elements:
Corrective Action
Plan Preparation
Groundwater Sampling and Contaminant Delineation
Health and Safety Plan (HSP) Preparation and Implementation
Ozone Sparging System Design, Installation, and Operations & Maintenance (O&M)
Project Management
The site is nearing closure with monitored natural attenuation providing final cleanup. The petroleum plume is contained on-site and constituents only occasionally exceed drinking water standards near the former storage tank location.
