The crowd was crazy on Sutter Street. Crazy in a good way. Young and old gathered on stairs and balconies – every inch of Sutter Street sidewalks filled with visitors vying for a glimpse of the newly-famous Bullipedes race.

The Running of the Bullipedes is a seriously silly race that includes five runners who are tethered together for the one-mile course.

Tethers and rope, hot pink, to be exact, didn’t stop first-place team, Oakridge High School boys, who crossed the finish line sweaty, but sporting pearly-white grins.

An Oakridge co-ed team came in moments behind, as did a Vista High School team.

Folsom residents Monty Williams and Maryanne Margherita arrived early to secure a prime spot under a shady Sutter Street overhang.

Williams wouldn’t dream of missing the event.

“What a great town Folsom is,” Williams said. “Even when I lived in Cameron Park, I liked to come here because they really know how to run a city.”

Margherita, who is new to the event, looked forward to her Bullipedes initiation.

“I heard they wear crazy costumes,” she said.

Crazy, but mostly just cute, costumes dotted the street.

Michael Raff, 8, and Ryan Raff, 9, sported costumes not-of-this world.

They were team “Jedi Cows” to be exact.

Running with mini cows-on-a-stick leading the way, the kids, along with mom and cousin, came in at a respectable time of 10 minutes, 55 seconds.

“It was very funny,” Ryan said of the race.

“But the costumes were hard to make,” brother, Michael added.

Another cow-themed team, Bad to the Bone Bulls, ran with horned helmets and tethered themselves with strands of chain link.

The team saw the race as a bonding activity for co-workers.

“We were standing around the office talking, and decided we were bad to the bone, so we decided to dress accordingly,” said a Burleson team member. “Now we’re headed over to Yagers for a drink.”

Finding a cold one, whether it was beer or water, seemed to be a goal of many spectators.

Business was brisk at Folsom Hotel’s bar, as was the case at many Sutter Street restaurants.

Folsom Historical Society had several volunteers on hand, selling bottles of chilly water for $1.

Volunteering seemed to be popular, and several helpers sporting volunteer vests were on hand to make sure the race route stayed clear for runners.

Patty Frank, a Sam’s Club employee, led a group of 11 Sam’s Club volunteers that called themselves Cattle Drive Street Managers.

“We’re here to support our community; our beloved Folsom,” Frank said. “We’re making sure everyone has a great time.”

Team Pac Man had a great time, and won first place for best costume as well. Adults dressed as Pac Man monsters, chased the kids, who were the “fruit.”

The Happy Heifers placed second, and the Nerd Herd placed third.
